Discovering the Metaverse, Part 3 - Somnium Space vs Bloktopia

Discovering the Metaverse, Part 3 - Somnium Space vs Bloktopia

Holy cow, we’re already to Part 3 of our Metaverse series! And this time around we’re visiting some pretty fresh Metaverses with Somnium Space and Bloktopia to see what all the hype is about.

If you’d like to start from the beginning of our Metaverse exploration, the best place to start would probably be with our article “Welcome to the Metaverse - Here’s What to Expect.” From there we have a few other articles you might want to see, including Part 1 and Part 2 of this Metaverse discussion.

So far, Decentraland and Dogami have advanced as our top Metaverse selections due to their unique NFT approaches and overall Metaverse features. Decentraland is geared more towards the individual and personal privacy, and Dogami has created fantastic augmented reality NFTs that are interactive and cutting edge.

No… not that kind of cutting edge… what even is that?

In this round, our opposing Metaverses of choice are Somnium Space and Bloktopia, and again both realms offer incredible Metaverse technologies. But which Metaverse will be declared the best Metaverse to use? The only way to know is to break it down, so let’s go!

The Basics of Somnium Space

When you think of the word Metaverse, do you envision a virtual world filled with endless creative possibilities. How about the ability to interact with anyone you meet in the world, or trade digital goods? Well that’s essentially what Somnium Space has been creating since 2017. CEO and founder, Artur Sychov, and his team in Czech Republic have created an immersive play-to-earn Metaverse.

With some $1.5 million worth of funding from Polygon and a handful of other investors, Somnium Space has been able to develop an Ethereum-based Metaverse that can be accessed on a computer or through virtual reality. The Metaverse features a more realistic, architectural approach to visuals thanks to the Unity game engine at its core.

Get ready to interact on a virtual scale

While participating in the Somnium Space Metaverse, you can earn $CUBE, the native token. Plus, creating objects, structures, avatars or really anything is super straightforward in this Metaverse thanks to drag and drop features, and free avatar creation options. Once you’re in, it’s very easy to stream and connect with friends.

The project does not have a white paper or roadmap per se, but instead relies on what they call an “Economy Paper” to describe the project and outline their vision for the future of their Metaverse technology. Overall, the Metaverse is meant to be a new world with next level communication, e-commerce, entertainment and places to live.

The Basics of Bloktopia

Bloktopia has also taken a fundamental approach to develop the Bloktopia Metaverse. Essentially, there is a certain amount of land available for purchase, as well as tons of interactivity to be had. But don’t be fooled, this Metaverse is deep and full of purpose. The Metaverse is designed as a 21 story skyscraper to honor Bitcoin’s 21 million coins. Foundationally, Bloktopia is meant to be the educational and entertainment hub for crypto lovers.

Buying your part of the tower is kinda like this^

The Bloktopia Metaverse was founded in 2021 by Paddy Carroll, and was developed by Animoca Brands and the Sony Playstation VR founders, with the Unity engine. With $4.9 million in financial backing, the project has been developed into a decentralized project that exists on Polygon and Elrond blockchains. The native token is called $BLOK, and users can collect their tokens, NFTs, and land online, via personal computer, or with virtual reality.

As an NFT-based economy, Bloktopia also offers users the option to play games either solo or with friends. Plus, capturing the moment or sharing it with friends is always possible with plenty of streaming options. Joining is easy as it’s free to create an avatar, and creating wearables is straightforward.

The project proudly displays its roadmap on their website which mentions exciting rollouts, new developments, metaverse integrations, multi-chain adaptations and more. The whitepaper claims that the project will, “act as a tokenized decentralized VR Crypto Skyscraper powered by the Polygon Network.”

How do the two differ?

So, the underlying approaches to either Metaverse are fairly similar to one another. Both platforms offer NFTs, land sales, community involvement, staking in the native token, gaming options, and can be played on a computer or with virtual reality goggles. So where are the key areas these two differ?

Unique Developments Somnium Space’s founder, Sychov, is incorporating an incredibly special piece of artificial intelligence into the Somnium Space Metaverse, ‘Live Forever’ mode. After his father passed, he got the idea to preserve personal data collected in the Metaverse and turn it into an immortal, artificial intelligence version of that person. In the case they pass away, their family, friends and the rest of the Somnium Space Metaverse can continue to relish bits and pieces of their loved one like their voice, sense of humor, etc... The goal is to use AI to create seamless interactions between avatars and people.

Ghost vs cyber ghost, who wins??

Aside from their philosophical approach, Bloktopia’s homage to Bitcoin’s 21 million coins is a unique development designed to catch the attention of some Bitcoiners, but also many crypto lovers. The idea is to attract newbies of any crypto space, including Bitcoin, to the metaverse to help educate and share information to assist with adoption.

Scalability The Somnium Space Metaverse is designed to facilitate high volumes of creation. While land is up for sale, the creative possibilities in the Metaverse are extensive. Also the Metaverse is built on the Ethereum blockchain which opens the door to many possibilities.

Bloktopia is set to scale a bit further simply because of the funding and development options at hand. Also, operating on Polygon provides the Bloktopia users with an affordable opportunity to live digitally.

Ethos Somnium Space is similar to the majority of Metaverses we have looked at in this series so far as the platform is a play-to-earn experience. The theory behind play-to earn is the more you play in the Metaverse, the more opportunities await you financially. Earning the native token is incentive to interact and partake in Metaverse activities.

We can all learnd together :)

Bloktopia, on the other hand, is structured on a Learn, Earn, Play, Create philosophy, which is unique and refreshing. This essentially means that users can expect to find useful and educational information in the Bloktopia hub around any crypto or Bitcoin subject. Users can also earn money through land, passive earning, staking and advertising opportunities. Playing is a core concept to the project as the founders want to ensure users can relax, socialize, and have fun competing with friends and other participants. Creating your avatar or designing your personal environment is of course integral to this Metaverse’s experience.

Pros and Cons of Each

Again, as one of our most effective tools for weighing our two Metaverses, we’ll use the handy-dandy pros and cons list. Keep in mind we’re evaluating at a high level here.

Somium Space

  • Pros: Somnium Space appears to be very well positioned as the prototypical Metaverse. They have all the building tools one could want and have created excellent experiential options for their users. On top of that, ‘Live Forever’ mode is a very interesting and exciting bit of development.

  • Cons: One of the primary disadvantages most users will note is that the project is not decentralized yet. However, with the infusion of NFTs, certain objects can be intrinsically based in a decentralized process. The company is not necessarily working on building decentralized infrastructures.

  • Pros: Bloktopia’s unique approach to attracting users and those who are generally interested in crypto is savvy, and should prove more enticing than traditional play-to-earn systems. There’s more substance and purpose to be found when users can learn about the environments and industries they are interested in while having fun.

  • Cons: The aesthetics of the Bloktopia Metaverse seem to be set in stone. The environment is darker, electronic and more dystopian. Obviously, only having one choice for ambiance will turn some users away to options that allow you to explore new worlds or create the scenery they desire.

This may be our closest showdown yet since both Metaverses offer similar, yet authentic experiences to their users. Somnium Space seems to be slightly focused on the overall experience of living in a Metaverse. Meanwhile, Bloktopia is finely tuned to user growth and interactivity.

Although Somnium Space’s ‘Live Forever’ mode is a stroke of brilliance, the technology may also present some potential accessibility issues for some privacy maxis who don’t wish to store a personal AI copy online. Nefarious actors become a threat since the project is centralized, making personal data-fueled AIs fairly risky.

When you’re looking for a full Metaverse experience

Overall, the concept behind Bloktopia is more robust and enticing for the average crypto and/or Metaverse newbie who wants to join and learn about the space. Buying land and experiencing a VR world is fun, but incorporating deeper purposes like education into a Metaverse platform takes the cake.

So with that, Bloktopia is going to take the cake for us this time around. But hats off to Somnium Space as well! Make sure to stay tuned for Part 4 of our Metaverse Series! Can you guess which Metaverses we’ll compare? Which is the best Metaverse of them all? Only time will tell.
